You Are Not Your Feelings

In the heat of the moment, it is easy to forget that you are not your feelings. To some people this concept might seem obvious. For people whose emotions seem to run their lives, this seems like a lie. When you are so depressed you can’t get out of bed, your depression does seem to define you. When you’re having an anxiety attack and your heart is racing, no one can convince you that your anxiety isn’t at the core of your being.

The truth though, however hard it is to hear, is that your feelings don’t define you. They are sometimes a bigger part than you might like, but only a part nonetheless. There are many other pieces that make up who you are. There is your sense of style, your taste in music, your level of education, and your political views. All of these things and more influence and make up parts of who you are. And just like your feelings, they don’t have to define you, unless you let them.

That is the major takeaway point here: you make a choice every moment of every day about whether you are going to allow your emotions to define you. Your feelings are only a part of you, but if you allow them to they can appear to make up who you are. Make a different choice. Choose to take control over your emotions and not allow them to define you.
